Reliable Loads for Sporting, Game and Vermin Shooting
At R Macleod & Sons, we stock a wide selection of shotgun cartridges for a variety of shooting disciplines including game shooting, clay pigeon, wildfowling, vermin control, and rough shooting. Whether you’re an experienced shot or new to the sport, we offer reliable, high-quality cartridges from trusted brands to suit your shotgun and your preferred load. Our range includes options for both 12 gauge and 20 gauge, as well as selected loads for 16, 28, and .410 bore, ensuring that you can find the right cartridge for your specific gun and purpose. We stock cartridges with different shot sizes, case lengths, and payloads, giving you the flexibility to choose the right performance in the field or on the range.
Cartridges for Every Type of Shotgun Shooter
Different shooting activities require different cartridge characteristics, and we cater for them all. For game shooting, we stock traditional fibre wad cartridges suitable for driven days, walked-up shooting, and estate use. These are often required on shoots where environmental concerns mean plastic wads are not permitted. For clay shooting, we supply lighter loads designed for repeated firing without excessive recoil. These cartridges are ideal for trap, skeet, and sporting clays, and are available in a range of shot sizes depending on the type of target and course layout.
Wildfowlers and pest controllers may require heavier, hard-hitting loads for larger quarry or tougher conditions. We stock cartridges loaded with larger shot sizes and higher velocities, offering effective performance over longer ranges.
If you're shooting in areas where lead is restricted or prohibited, we also supply non-toxic alternatives including steel, bismuth, and tungsten-based cartridges. These are available in suitable wads and loads to comply with legal requirements while maintaining effective shot patterns.
Trusted Brands and Consistent Performance
We stock cartridges from leading manufacturers including Gamebore, Hull, Eley, RC, Fiocchi, and Lyalvale Express. These brands are recognised for their quality control, consistency, and innovation across a broad range of cartridges. Each load is manufactured with care to ensure even shot distribution, reliable ignition, and predictable recoil. Whether you prefer traditional English loads or high-performance continental options, our selection covers all preferences and price points. We also stock competition-grade cartridges for shooters who demand the highest standards of precision and reliability during competitive events or regular practice.
Shot Sizes and Load Options
We offer cartridges in a wide range of shot sizes, including popular choices like 7.5, 6, 5, and 4, as well as smaller or larger options depending on your intended use. Whether you’re breaking clays at close range or shooting high pheasants, choosing the right shot size and payload is essential for clean, effective results.
Most cartridges are available in a range of case lengths including 65mm, 67mm, 70mm, and 76mm (3"), allowing compatibility with older side-by-sides, modern over-and-unders, and semi-automatics alike. If you’re unsure which length or load is right for your shotgun, our team will be happy to help.
Bulk Purchasing and In-Store Collection
Shotgun cartridges are typically sold in boxes of 25 and cases of 250. Many of our regular customers choose to buy by the slab for cost-effectiveness and convenience. Discounts may be available on larger quantities or for regular buyers—please ask in-store for more details. Due to legal restrictions on the sale of ammunition in the UK, shotgun cartridges are available for in-store collection only and must be purchased in person with a valid shotgun certificate. We do not ship cartridges via mail order. If you're planning a visit, you're welcome to check availability with us ahead of time.
